Relationship between Land Use Mix and Walking Choice in High-Density Cities: A Review of Walking in Seoul, South Korea

This study confirmed the general belief of urban planners that mixed land use promotes walking in Seoul, a metropolis East Asia, by analyzing effect on travel mode choice housewives and unemployed people who make non-commuting trips weekdays. Using binomial logistic regression commuting data, it was found more neighborhood environment’s uses are, pedestrians prefer to walk rather than drive. The nonlinear relationship between mix index also confirmed. Although neighborhoods increased probability residents choosing over using cars, when degree complexity above certain level, opposite observed. As density commercial areas increased, selecting increased. In addition locational characteristics, income housing type were major factors affecting walk; i.e., residents’ environment controlled for higher living an apartment multi-family or single-family housing, they likely choose driving walking.
